Calderdale SEND Update: Local Offer Live, Inspection Results & June Events

Noa’s Place

Is it just us, or has June arrived with a bit of a bang?

Between the school runs, the never-ending paperwork, and trying to enjoy the odd bit of sunshine, it feels like the calendar is suddenly very full.

June is always a busy month for the SEND community in Calderdale. There is a lot happening, from big policy updates to local galas and quiet support groups.

We know how it feels when your inbox is overflowing with "important updates." It can be a lot to take in when you are already spinning so many plates.

So, we’ve rounded up the key things you need to know this month. Take a breath, grab a cuppa, and let’s dive in.

The Big One: SEND Local Offer Live (June 23)

If you only put one date in your diary this month, make it Tuesday, 23 June.

The SEND Local Offer Live event is happening at Calderdale College (specifically the Inspire Centre) from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Think of this as a marketplace for support. It is a free event where dozens of local services, support groups, and organisations set up stalls in one room.

Why does this matter? Because finding out what actually exists in Halifax and the surrounding valleys can feel like a part-time job. You shouldn't have to be a private detective to find a sensory group or a local charity.

At Local Offer Live, you can walk around and chat with people face-to-face. You can ask the questions that have been bothering you without waiting on a phone queue. Whether you are looking for information on EHCPs, local activities, or health services, it is all there.

It’s a great way to see what’s available without the stress of "official" meetings. Plus, it’s a chance to see other families who are on a similar path. Sometimes just being in a room where everyone "gets it" makes a world of difference.

The Honest Truth: Recent Inspection Results

You might have heard some chatter recently about the Ofsted and CQC joint inspection of SEND services in Calderdale.

The report found that while there are some clear strengths in our schools, the overall outcomes for children are "inconsistent."

For many of us, that word: inconsistent: is a very polite way of describing a very frustrating reality. It’s the feeling of having to fight for every bit of support. It’s the long wait for an autism assessment or the struggle to get a high-quality EHCP.

The report mentioned that some families get great support, while others are left waiting or feeling unheard. If you’ve felt like you have to become an "expert" just to get the basics for your child, we want you to know you aren’t alone.

It shouldn't be your job to be a legal expert, a therapist, and an advocate all at once. But we know that’s exactly what many of you are doing every single day.

This "fractured" feeling is exactly why we are so passionate about building Noa's Place. We want to create a hub that fills those gaps: a place that stays consistent even when the wider system feels shaky.

Whilst we are still searching for the perfect 6,000-10,000 sq ft space in Halifax to call home, we are right there with you in the meantime. We're building our interactive digital tools to help you navigate those overwhelming moments, like coping with sensory overload.

Learning Disability Week: "Do You See Me?"

This week (June 15–21) is Learning Disability Week. The theme this year is a powerful one: "Do you see me?"

It is all about being seen, heard, and valued. Too often, neurodivergent and disabled individuals are expected to "mask" or fit into a world that wasn't built for them.

Today, Tuesday June 16, there is a Learning Disability Week Health Event running in Halifax. It’s being hosted by Lead The Way and is a chance to get some practical health advice in an environment that understands your needs.

At Noa's Place, "Do you see me?" is at the heart of everything we do. When Josh started this journey for his son, Noa, it was because he wanted a world where Noa is seen for exactly who he is: not just a set of "needs" or a diagnosis.

We believe everyone should have a space where they can just be. No masks. No pressure. Just belonging.

Together we make space.

What’s On: June Events in Calderdale

If you are looking for ways to get out and about this month, there are some great inclusive options around Halifax and Brighouse.

Free SEND Climbing at ROKT (Brighouse) ROKT Activity Centre offers fantastic accessible climbing sessions for SEND kids and young people (aged 6–19). These sessions use adapted equipment and have instructors who actually understand sensory needs. They usually run on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons: check the Local Offer page to book your spot.

Hebden Bridge SEND Mums Wellbeing Club (June 20) Being a SEND parent can be isolating. On Saturday, June 20, there is a wellbeing club for SEND mums in Hebden Bridge. It’s a chance to step away from the "carer" role for a moment and just be yourself with people who understand the unique tired that comes with this life.

Local Galas Galas are a staple of a Yorkshire June! The Halifax Gala just happened on June 13, and the Brighouse Gala is coming up on June 27. Galas can be noisy and crowded, so we always recommend checking if they have "quiet hours" or dedicated accessible areas. If you’re planning to go, maybe pack the ear defenders and a safety plan just in case it gets a bit much.

Closing: Why We’re Here

The news this month reminds us why we started Noa's Place. The system is tough. The outcomes are inconsistent. And parents are tired.

We are working hard behind the scenes to find our permanent home in Calderdale. We are looking for a space where the sensory rooms are always ready, the café is always welcoming, and you never have to explain why your child is having a hard time.

Until we find that building, we are here as a community. You can explore our plans for the hub or read more about our mission.

You are doing an incredible job navigating a system that isn't always easy. If today feels like a lot, just remember: you are not alone.

We’re right there with you.
